Question by cheeko: How much money would I need for Australia for two months?
I am planning on going to Australia for 2 months, but have no idea how much money will be needed. I wannna do it as cheap as possible as this is all very last minute. I am flying to Melbourne and then meeting a friend who has a car. We will be traveling from Melb up to Queensland.

Answer by bluebell
I brought $ 2000AUD for 5 weeks, and my debit card (with Maestro logo) for extra if I needed it. I stayed in backpacker hostels (http://backpackers-australia.org/ says $ 10 to $ 35 per night – my experience was around $ 20) and made sandwiches in the morning to bring with me for lunch on day trips, to minimise spending. If you intend to eat out frequently, you’d need more.

For safety reasons, I suggest you bring some cash in $ AUD but leave the bulk of your money in your account. Take money from an ATM when necessary, but not for multiple small amounts, as there is a fee per transaction as well as the currency exchange. Going by car, you will contribute to the petrol costs. When I was there 2 years ago, petrol was dearer than at home. I found the commercial tourist attractions expensive, but a holiday in Australia is an amazing experience.

If you have a credit card which is paid automatically from your bank account, use the card for purchases. Don’t use it to take out cash – this is treated as a loan, at a higher interest rate.

Travel light, just a few basic outfits you can mix and match, and have a wonderful time !!!
